Topic: Replacing Rotted Sill Posted: 11 Jun 2007 at 10:38pm
My wife and I purchased our first home, which was build around 1850. There are many projects to perform to get the house back to its original condition. Our first major project was a surprise. We found a section of the sill rotted. There is a section about 2 feet long that is practically gone. The wood also is in rough shape for about 4 feet on either side of this damage. My plan is to cut out the bad section and replace it with pressure treated. I can jack the floor joists without a problem, but Im worried about jacking the exterior wall. The houst is a baloon framed home, so the studs go right up to the roof. If it were a platform fram, I could jack the floor of the second story. I was thinking of nailing a 2X8 across all of the studs, jacking from the bottom of the 2X8 and putting lally columns under the 2X8. The jack and lally columns have to be at a slight angle or they would be onto of where the new sill needs to sit. Is there a danger of pushing the wall outwards with this jacking method? Any suggestions on how I can accomplish this task would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Joe
